The book 1984 was written around 70 years ago, George Orwell wrote this book in perspective of the year actually being 1984, depending on the way he thought the world would be at that time. Looking at the world today and how the government is, there are many similarities with the way Orwell describes The Party and Big Brother and how everyone is being watched. For example, in Winston’s house, the television cannot be turned off, it monitors every movement he does in his own house.
In public, cameras are planted everywhere, every person living in Oceania has now gotten used to the fact that they are being watched, it became normalized because the phrase, “Big Brother is watching you” is the most repeated phrase and it has become part of their everyday lives. In addition, there are also lots of posters that have Big Brother’s face on it in the streets and on many other different things.
The Party says that with the people being watched and monitored, it would be better for everyone and would cause fewer problems, it would just be a better living for everyone. In every community there are going to be people who would try to rebel against these kinds of things and in Oceania; for the people who do not follow the rules and go against the Party, they are characterized as traitors and they might disappear after some time. The party does not want anyone to do anything other than follow them, no one can follow a religion because it represents something higher than the party, they cannot do anything that shows The Party having less power over them and less control.
Knowing that you are being watched all the time changes the way you act, like what you say to specific people and what you do around them. In some way, being watched can control your actions and your mind in some way. Children are being turned against their parents and are getting brainwashed into thinking that what The Party is doing is right, the children have to spy and watch every move and hear every word their parents say to report back any suspicious actions they do.
Like today, we all know that we can be watched through all our devices by the government, and knowing that, it makes us monitor what we say and what we do so the government would not be able to know every single thing we do in our lives. Not only being watched by the government through our phones or laptops but also them being able to see what we have on these devices because nowadays, our lives are in these devices and knowing that you are being watched would make you create a second person in you in some sort of way to make the government believe that you are this normal person.
This blog was really unique, I loved reading it! How do you think us being watched changes us to become different people? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

I totally agree, this was a very interesting topic. I had a similar question, do you think us knowing we are being recorded 24/7 affects us in a positive or negative way?

it can change us to become different people but not completely, it just makes us more aware of our actions and can change the way we act.

Interesting comparison to the modern world. Do you think Orwell wrote this book to foreshadow our future world?

I love the thought you put into this. How do you think things would be if we weren’t being watched?

I think if we were not being watched, people would act differently because there won’t be anyone judging what they are doing. it would make everyone feel more comfortable to live their life in their own way and not get paranoid.

I like the way you compared our world with the world in 1984. However, to what extent do you think that being monitored actually changes the way we are? If so do you think it’s beneficial in a way?

ّّI answered the first part of the question in the other replies but I think there are both pros and cons to being watched. some pros: people would be let loose and there would be some sort of control but not too much. some cons: it can be weird and creepy knowing that you are being watched all day even in your own home.

I feel like there needs to be some sort of control over a society so order is maintained. Although we see that in 1984 a line is crossed with that control, do you think that a line has been crossed in our modern day and age?

@nesreen. today, it is not the same as it used to be but the line can definitely get crossed
