How does the Party Control its Citizens?

Comrade Morgan was walking down some streets late at night, he was hoping that he didn’t look as if he was committing a crime although it was past hour twenty-three, so nobody was around to see him. However, being out after that time was also not allowed but he had to be out there. As he was walking he passed a little shop, the lights were off inside and there was a closed sign, but he noticed that there was light shining through from the second-floor window. He didn’t inquire about it because he knew who lived there. Trust between comrades was difficult to establish but this specific comrade was good at what he did so Joseph didn’t ask any questions. Joseph went home soon after, he knew he wasn’t needed for too long; everyone was being watched with or without him anyway. The next day Joseph was at work when the Two Minutes Hate started. This was the best time to find crimethink happening. It wasn’t hard to find either, it happened all in the face. Every facial expression made points to it, whether the person eyes are full of hate or hesitation, whether the eyebrows furrow down in anger or up in worry, whether their mouths are frowning or shouting their hate against Goldstein as loud as they can. It all shows. He spotted someone in the middle of the chaos not screaming as loudly or not as angry as everyone else. They were fidgety and looking at every place except the telescreen. Comrade Morgan found his victim of the day. Comrade Bane was never seen again. Another day another victim. Joseph was tired of it; he didn’t understand why people don’t understand that they will be taken out of this society if they don’t obey. Joseph thinks the rules are simple, no crimethink and hate Goldstein. Of course, there’s more to it than that but those two are major factors in staying alive. Being watched would not be so hard if the people just obeyed the rules. However, people disappearing was also a good way to show that if you disobey you’re gone. It kept citizens under control for the most part. It was lunch time, it was social hour for most however, they were careful in what they said knowing there are telescreens listening to every word. Joseph heard a man talking, too much talk in his opinion. He turned to see who it was and noticed that it was Comrade Syme speaking to Comrade Smith. He was talking about the dictionary; Joseph decided he needed to be kept on a closer watch. Joseph sat on a table near Comrade Syme and Smith, he tried to listen on to the conversation. He heard snippets of conversation including talk about the dictionary, proles and Big Brother. He sounded intelligent maybe too intelligent. Joseph needed to investigate more into him. Comrade Syme seemed to read many books, Joseph thought that was what made him intelligent and that intelligence is not needed. Comrade Syme also visited the Chestnut Tree Café too often. Everyone knew that place had crime written all over it because that was where old Party leaders that turned out to be traitors frequented quite a bit. Joseph watched him work, he was passionate about his work but there was something about him that did not sit well with Joseph. A couple weeks later Comrade Syme was gone.

    1. Thank you! I felt that writing from a person in the ThoughtPolice would best show how the Party controls it’s citizens. Do you think I was able to get my message across?

      1. Hehe thanks! I think I would try to write it from the people that are captured themselves to see the process of how they die or maybe not die, who knows?

  1. I like your idea, but I think you can improve your blog by introducing your point earlier to make it clear for people to understand your ideas more clearly. Why do you think when people disappear in Oceania, it will make others obey the rules more? I wonder where Syme has gone?

    1. Thank you for telling me that. I think it will instill fear into the citizens so that they won’t disobey the Party and in turn they won’t lose their lives. I think Syme went to room 101 and unfortunately was killed.
